Gives:

No duplication of data: Share between access methods in single index file.
Updating Metadata is easy: Since centrally maintained.
Resource discovery / Searching: Structured metadata allows rich indexing rather than interpreting HTML and natural language.
Metadata without unpacking files: Archives contain file hierarchies and so can external metadata.
