UK Internet Sites: Sources

Sources

The source I use now to build the various .uk site lists are the UK Directory Name Service (DNS) records -- see the UK NIC for more details.

In the past I used these sources:

• Sites accessing my Internet Parallel Computing Archive and HENSA/Unix.
• Sites in the National Academic WWW Cache when it was run at HENSA/Unix.
• The UK Name Registration Scheme (UK NRS) records.
• The UK .uk X.500 white pages.
• The WARP Project Support Software
• JANET Sites at JANET.
• Information from the Eunet GB Commercial domain naming in the UK pages.
• The Imperial College list below.
• Intuition and guesswork. Hmm, maybe that should be higher up.

Some other sources I didn't use but could have:

• The RIPE hostcount data (for many domains, not just UK)
• The WHOIS server provided by EUNET GB at whois.britain.eu.net (This is copyright EUNet GB)

• Yell! from British Telecom's Yellow Pages has a very yellow (sunglasses required) perspective on the UK web.

• The Internet Directory UK (EMAP Ltd.) (Direct Link without redirection)

• The Knowhere Guide maintained by Tim Leighton-Boyce - a user-donated guide to UK cities and regions.
